As a bride preparing for your Maui beach wedding, we’re sure you have the most amazing dress in mind or you’re having the best time shopping for the one! Your wedding gown is one of the most important pieces of clothing that you’ll shop for and there are so many options out there to choose from!! However, the same might not be true for the groom and your guests. Of course they are bursting with excitement for your destination wedding in Maui, but their next thought will undoubtedly be, “What do I wear to a beach wedding?” From the groom to your guests, after planning hundreds of Maui beach weddings, we have you covered! Below we are sharing our recommendations so that everyone attending your wedding looks their best and more importantly looks appropriate in your wedding photos!
Note: Though Maui is a warm, tropical island, most beach weddings take place about an hour before sunset, so your guests won’t have to worry about being extremely hot at this time of day. The weather will be breezy and comfortable.
You know you’re going to look amazing on the big day but your groom will most likely need your help and advice on what he should wear. Some groom’s first thought might be to wear shorts and an Aloha shirt, though that might be appropriate for a luau, it is not the best look for your wedding day. Remember, he is going to be standing next to you in that amazing dress, he needs to look just as good and shorts aren’t the best look when standing next to a gorgeous, flowing, white wedding gown. We recommend that the groom wear linen or lightweight pants in tan, grey or navy blue, paired with a long sleeved, lightweight button down shirt. Some of our grooms choose to wear a lightweight cotton or linen suit which we love as well. It’s his big day too, so he should look and feel as amazing as the bride. Here are a few examples to share with your groom!
We love the way this groom looks in this lightweight tan suit, his look compliments his gorgeous bride’s stunning gown perfectly! If your groom doesn’t love the thought of a suit, he can easily skip the jacket and even wear his shirt untucked for a more casual yet still appropriate look.
This groom looks dashing in navy blue next to his beautiful bride! Again, if the thought of a vest doesn’t appeal to him he can wear a white shirt, skip the tie and still look amazing.
Something that might not have crossed your mind is how your guests are going to look in your wedding photos. Of course you want your guests to look great and remain comfortable, but they may need a little guidance in this area as well. The last thing you want is for your guest’s attire to interfere with the overall look and feel of your wedding day. Our top wedding photographers suggest that your guests wear light, solid colored clothing to look their best in photos. They should avoid wearing clothing with busy patterns, stripes or large prints, Aloha/Hawaiian shirts or dresses aren’t the best choice.
Instead, women should opt for flowy, loose-fitting dresses paired with flat or low-heeled sandals and simple jewelry. They should choose a lightweight material like cotton, linen or any material that drapes nicely. We recommend that their clothing mimic the tropical tones that will be surrounding you such as light blue, turquoise, sand, and sunset tones are all great options. Hair and makeup should be soft and neutral.
For the men, we recommend a light colored, button down shirt paired with light colored or beige pants. Shorts are never appropriate, even at a beach wedding. Flip flops or sandals though are perfectly fine.
We hope these tips on how to dress for a beach wedding help to guide you and your guests in the right direction. Please let us know if we can help to answer any questions for you, we would love to hear from you!
